Runa Biby rolls bidi for a living, local cigarettes made with leaves and tobacco. She has a 2½ year old son, has been married for 4 years, and has leprosy.
Ten years ago, Protima Akhuli began to have trouble eating. Several months later, her hands became anesthetic and she developed ulcers. She went to her local Primary Health Clinic (PHC) and was diagnosed with leprosy. While she was immediately put on MDT, her leg also became anesthetic. Thanks to effect:hope, Protima has since undergone several surgeries, including those for her ulcer and a toe amputation.
